The measure used by BSA to determine the growth of Scouting, by any chartered partner, is the number of units they sponsor. For some
years, these figures were not available or were not broken down by chartering organization. The page entitled, Membership Statistics,
provides the number of Roman Catholic units, the number of religious sponsored units and the total number of units for each year such information is available.
The membership statistics have been
compiled from the BSA Annual Reports and other BSA and NCCS publications.
Information on the number of Catholic Religious Emblems have never really been recorded. What has generally been compiled is the number of Catholic religious emblems that have been bought by the dioceses. In this case, it is better to view these statistics more as an average than an absolute number of emblems presented in each given year. Some larger dioceses purchase a large number of emblems in one year and present emblems from this supply over the next 3-4 years. Especially if they have the budget and anticipate a price increase in the medals.
