As previously mentioned, these numbers are actually rough approximations, as for almost of its history the NCCS relied on reports
of the sales of emblems from the manufacturer, rather than reports from the dioceses of the number of emblems awarded. As Catholic Scouting in dioceses is managed -- for the vast majority of dioceses -- by
volunteers, it has been extremely difficult for the NCCS to have every diocese provide annual reports of emblems earned, thus the reliance on reports of the sale of the emblems.
Unfortunately, after 1998, the NCCS stopped reporting the number of emblems sold by emblem. Rather, they divided them up into Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers (Explorers). As the Light of Christ and
Parvuli Dei are both earned by Cub Scouts, and the AAD, Light is Life and PPXII can all be earned by Boy Scouts, such a report is impossible to use for historical purposes. The reason for the change in
reporting has never been made public. One reason many organizations change reporting formats is to obscure less than impressive results. Whether this is the case with the NCCS is unknown at this time.
Note: A shaded section ( ) indicates that the emblem was not available for that year, if the section is
blank ( ), then at the present time, I have no information for that year. The numbers for the Parvuli Dei
emblem, for the years 1967-69, were extrapolated from an aggregate number reported in 1970, for those
years. The Bronze Pelican is not listed, as it is not a nationally recognized religious emblem. There is also no record of the number of awards purchased for each year.
